Explore the forest soil


    Spring breeze blowing gently, across the forest, pack off the winter depression and silence. The branch leaves fall over each other to confide in green bracts, like tiny spots. The colors of the vegetation in the deep mountains, turning from yellow to cyan, cyan to green. 

    On April 14th , on this lovely spring, children entered the Uni Forest School fun bay, walking in the fields between mountains, feeling the water and wind, feeling at the foot of every inch of tender grass and small soil. Understanding the role and importance of soil from the practice, they germinate the love of nature and the land. 


Safety rules in the forest


Children's one-day forest course was started in the morning circle and the explanation of the forest rules. Using a set of pictures of forest wood warning image to explain the safety rules vividly, the teachers attracted the attention of children.


Forest games

Forest’s influence on the child is multifaceted: the child's vision, hearing, taste, touch and so on.

Natural game: Barefoot “caterpillar”

The children were divided into groups to take off their shoes and put on eye patches, having pats on the shoulders of the front children and walking slowly on the lawn. No sound, just feel the ground with the soles of the feet feel, feel grass and soil.


"Wow, I feel I was walking along the narrow rails on the both sides”"I feel like going to a place where the foot is cool, another place to where the grass is itch and spinous”, “when I was turning, I felt the earth was in rotation......" The children experience the "barefoot caterpillar", accompanied by a wealth of imagination, excited to share the feeling of their feet feel! 


Sense game: earth window

    Children took turns with leaves covering the body, only the face toward the sky. It just like the grass grows in the soil. From the perspectives of temperature, humidity, sound and perspective, children feel that "they seem to be a part of the soil".

   When sharing feelings, some children said "I feel like a flower, and it is very warm when covered by leaves”. “I close my eyes and hear the sound of the wind”, “as if my mother covers myself up”, “I imagine I were the soil, facing the vast sky, seeing the branches overhead". Through the window of the earth, the children are able to see the different world, where they can smell the leaves, open the vision, hearing, touch, temperature and other senses.

Nature notes: tracking soil animals

Children in each class were divided into three groups, according to teachers’ explanations they look for ants, grasshoppers, frogs and put them into the observation box to observe and record. After that, they released them.

Looking for frogs, ants and grasshoppers, children have fun!

We let children have a basic cognition on soil animal, think about the relationship between these natural species, the effects of social and human, let children learn to think holistically. We also stressed the importance of treating small animal, because even small animal has its existence value, and cultivate children to protect small animals and natural environment consciousness.

Careful observation, record carefully

Natural Science: soil acidification experiment

   Based on the fact that different types of soil pH in different degrees, we let the children choose the experimental samples, mainly that vegetable farm soil, Kawa Sato sampling, rotten leaf soil. Then made soil pH determination and comparison of records. They sampled soil and did experiments by themselves as well as made conclusion, which contributes to the cognitive structure of soil and the cultivation of the spirit of exploration.

Natural experiment: making earthworm observation box

   Children looked for loose and fertile soil to search worms, and put them into the observation box, and then covered them with soil, sand, decaying leaves, soil and leaves with layered soil structure in order to observe the box. The box will be taken to school to observe. Children sprinkle a small amount of water to maintain soil moisture regularly, observe and record earthworms’ activities in different soil structures. Careful observation develops the habit of continuous exploration and learning for children and makes them own deeper understanding of soil and soil animals.

Review and conclusion

    The classroom is moved to the forest, and in such education environment, children's vision is open, they breathe fresh air, see the colorful things of nature, arousing the curiosity and a powerful and unconstrained style like imagination of them, helping them learn to explore the natural harmonious coexistence and understand nature,  become a kid who is "educated, can learn, dare to play, can live together with others".
